Winter storm will dump up to 10 cm of snow on Ottawa Friday

Environment Canada says the snow beginning Friday morning will be heavy at times all day with an accumulation of five to 10 centimetres.

Motorists should expect hazardous driving conditions, Environment Canada says in a weather advisory.

Expect delays. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for the tail lights ahead of you and be prepared to stop, says the advisory.

The snow may make it hard to navigate highways, roads, walkways and parking lots, and visibility may suddenly be reduced.

It’s cold Friday morning, too, with a temperature of -13 C recorded at 7 a.m. at the Ottawa airport and a 31 km an hour wind that created a wind chill of -24 C.

Expect a high of -8 C on Friday, dipping down to -24 C overnight.

Saturday looks like a perfect winter day though, with fresh snow from the day before, sunshine and a high of -3 C. The forecast for Saturday night calls for a low of -7 C and a chance of flurries.

On Sunday expect a temperature of -3 C with flurries, becoming colder overnight with a low of -22 C.

The Rideau Canal is open for skating between Somerset Street West and Bank Street. However, another 3.2-km section was to open at 8 a.m. Friday, from Bank to Carleton University.

The NCC asks skaters not to venture onto closed sections of the canal.
