While most homes are designed for average households, large families need something that can accommodate their needs, as well.

Beyond square footage, the floor plan should balance movement, privacy and connections for five or more people.

This can be seen in the Westport II by Morrison Homes. The 2,287-square-foot, front-drive single-family model is presented as a show home in Cornerstone.

This depiction of the floor plan includes its optional four-bedroom second level. The standard version has three bedrooms.

For even larger families, the floor plan has an option that converts its flex room into a main floor bedroom. To support this concept, the half bathroom can be switched to a full bathroom.

These options are beneficial to family members needing to avoid regular use of stairs, such as an elderly parent.

The master bedroom reaches 13 feet eight inches by 14 feet six inches and is equipped with a spacious rectangular walk-in closet, and ensuite.

Shown with a floating vanity featuring two sinks and striking full-height backsplash, the ensuite is functional and upscale. There’s also a deep soaker tub beneath a large window and a glass-encased shower with full-height tile.

One of the secondary bedrooms neighbours the master and the other two are side by side on the opposite end of the second level.

Centring the top floor is a spacious bonus room with two tall windows. It faces a laundry room with a front-load washer and dryer.

The main floor is open and bright. Soaring windows on the rear wall pull considerable sunlight across the dining area, great room and kitchen.

Along the front stretch of the main level, elements such as the glass railing on the staircase to the second level help spread natural light, as well.

Unlike many homes, the staircase is positioned near the front door, rather than the back of the home. This prevents the stairs from absorbing space preferably used by the kitchen and other busy social spaces.

The L-shaped kitchen is well-proportioned and supports use by multiple people. It can be accessed from three sides, including a spice kitchen that links to the mudroom, helping with circulation.

As seen in the the show home, the optional spice kitchen is just off a walk-in pantry. This secondary cooking space is useful for restricting the spread of scents from strong-flavoured cuisines to other ends of the home.

It also helps with tucking away mess from meal preparation when guests are over.

There’s considerate pacing between the appliances, allowing family members to access what they need without getting in each other’s way.

The appliances are stainless-steel, starring a stylish chimney-style hoodfan.

Another kitchen feature is an island with a sink and eating bar that seats at least three people.

The dining area and great room are positioned side by side along the rear wall. An elongated fireplace surrounded in full-height tile serves as an elegant focal point for people occupying the space.

The great room measures 14 feet by 15 feet, supporting the seating and movement requirements of larger families.

For people who choose to not convert the flex room into a bedroom, it’s full of potential. The show home has this space staged with a desk, chair and shelves. There’s a floor plan option to have the flex room enclosed.
