Situation Report 5 – May 2022 : Diplomat Magazine

Strategically, it has emerged in reports that the US intelligence community has been providing real time intelligence to Ukrainian forces that has allowed Ukraine to kill 12 Russian General Officers and the cruiser Moskva. 


Today was another day of some widespread air and missile strikes by Russian forces with reports of impacts in the Kyiv region in the north, Odesa in the south and numerous central, east and southeastern regions including near Kramatorsk. 


Russian strikes have destroyed or damaged 15 Ukrainian fuel depots and a major refinery, destroying significant reserves. 


On the ground, Russian and Belarusian forces continue “demonstrative actions” to fix Ukrainian forces around Kyiv in place.


General Valeriy Zaluzhny, Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, announced that Ukrainian troops have now switched to launching counteroffensives near Kharkiv and the Russian-occupied city of Izyum in Kharkiv Oblast.


Russian forces have withdrawn from large areas to the West of the Donets River bear Kharkiv , blowing up bridges to cover their retreat. The main road bridge across the Donets was blown up east of Rubizhne.


Russia is continuing to partially blockade the heavily hit city of Kharkiv. Russian shelling intensified in Kharkiv and Kharkiv Oblast, targeting residential areas.


For the Russian forces the decisive terrain in east Ukraine is the convex line running from Izium through Siverskyi Donets to the Severondontsk Salient. 


Russian shelling was intensive across parts of the northern Donbas today where Russia continues to make some small gains. 


Russia has advanced to varying degrees along four axis from Kharkiv and Izyum. 


Advance From Kreminna—Russia has advanced to the outskirts of Lyman and partially captured Yampil and captured Zarichne. 


Seizure of Zarichne has allowed Russia to cut the main rail access to Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk between Lyman and Yampil.


Advance From Borov—Russia has advanced around 25 kilometres capturing Lozove and a number of other smaller towns. Russia has also occupied 15-20 villages that were previously in no-man’s land.


The two axes of attack south of the Donets river have Russian Forces moving on Barvinkove and Vella Komyshuvakha with Russian troops only capturing three small villages. 


Ukrainian forces also repelled 11 Russian attacks in the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts.


Russian troops have advanced near Niu York and near Nyzhnie, also through the forest near Studenok.


Fierce battles still continue in the vicinity of Popasna, Kreminna and Torske in Luhansk Oblast. 


Ukraine said Russian planes continued to launch air attacks on Mariupol, focusing on the Azovstal steelworks. 


Russian forces have not been allowing anyone to leave the occupied areas of Kherson Oblast or enter from the Ukrainian-controlled territories. 


Mykolayiv was struck several times today from the air. 


Russia aims to occupy the whole Kherson Oblast and create favorable conditions to attack the cities of Mykolaiv and Kryvyi Rih.


There are reports of another possible Russian false flag provocation earlier today on the Transnistria/Ukrainian Border. 


Germany is prepared to supply seven Panzerhaubitze 2000 armoured howitzers to Ukraine. 


Canada’s Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie announced that Canada’s ambassador to Ukraine will relocate from Poland to Ukraine.
