“The milder weather in the forecast and the snowfall contribute to the formation of cracks on the ice surface as well as of dangerous holes that can be hidden under the snow,” the National Capital Commission said in a statement on its website.

“This closure will help preserve the ice throughout the mild weather, so we can work to reopen the Skateway as soon as possible.”

All access points to the ice will be blocked and red flags will be hoisted to alert people of the closure, which will end “as soon as ice conditions are safe and weather permits,” the NCC said while asking people not to go on the ice.

Until Wednesday, the Skateway had been open for 27 consecutive days. When it opened in mid-January, it was the first time in over 20 years that the full 7.8-kilometre route was skateable on opening day.
