There were few details immediately available, but the accident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. near 457 Hazeldean, about 400 metres east of the intersection with Castlefrank Road.

Paramedics arrived to find the man with critical injuries and he died en route or shortly after reaching hospital. Police said they were working on finding next-of-kin.

The investigation forced the closure of Hazeldean to eastbound traffic at Castlefrank and westbound traffic at Carbrooke Street.

Given the snow and freezing rain, there were a number accidents across the city during the afternoon rush-hour, but it was unclear if weather conditions played a role in the Kanata tragedy.

Any witnesses with information were asked to call the Ottawa Police Service’s Collisions Investigations Unit at 613-236-1222 ext. 5366.
