One of the two vehicles went off the roadway and struck a tree, Ontario Provincial Police reported Friday evening.

The death of the adult passenger was confirmed at the scene, OPP said, while the other four occupants of that vehicle were transported to hospital. The lone occupant of the second vehicle received minor injuries, a media release added.

Because of the investigation by the OPP’s traffic collision section, eastbound Highway 417 remained closed Friday evening between mile markers 66 and 79.

Anyone with information about the incident was asked to contact the Russell County detachment of the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
