These scams involve a person contacting a victim pretending to be a grandchild and claiming they have been arrested by police and now need money to post bail.

The scam targets are encouraged to withdraw cash, which is later picked up by a courier.

Over the past few months, Ottawa police have received more than 10 complaints from victims who have been bilked of more than $100,000.

“This is part of an alarming trend in cities nationwide,” police noted in a release.

Police identified the suspects as Jason Goulet-Fernandez, 22, and Danielle Jiminex-Golez, 19. Police allege the suspects were involved in five incidents, for a total of more than $46,000.

They are charged with fraud over $5,000, possession of proceeds of crime and conspiracy.

“Due to the seriousness of the series of offences and the vulnerability of those impacted,” police released photos of the suspects, in order to help identify any other victims.

Police also noted the suspects were using a four-door 2007 black Honda Civic bearing Quebec plates Z15XPL.

Anyone with information about these incidents or who may have been a victim of fraud should contact the Ottawa Police Service organized fraud unit at 613-236-1222. ext. 5292.
