The Montfort Hospital’s emergency department will be closed overnight on Saturday and Sunday, as COVID-19-related absences, vacations, staff fatigue and burnout, as well as a nursing shortage, have forced the hospital to make the “difficult” decision.

The department will close at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and not re-open until 7:30 a.m. the following day.

The last patients will be admitted at around 7 p.m. The emergency department, however, will still be open to ambulances.

“The decision to close the Emergency, even for a few hours, is not easy to make,” the hospital said in a statement, “but we have to do it, to ensure our team is able to offer excellent, safe and compassionate care when the Emergency reopens.”

The Carleton Place & District Memorial Hospital’s emergency department will be closed from 7 a.m. Saturday until 7 a.m. Sunday, with a shortage of nursing staff cited as the reason for the closure. One physician and one nurse will remain at the department to respond to those who arrive unaware of the closure.

Nearby emergency departments include the Almonte General Hospital, Arnprior Regional Health, Perth & Smiths Falls District Hospital and the Queensway Carleton Hospital.
