Getting around: Kids aged 6 and 7 can ride free on OC Transpo; new construction; speeder more than doubles limit on Greenbank Road

While some local construction projects get ready to gear up in 2022, one driver came to a no-doubt screeching halt on New Year’s Eve.

The Ottawa Police Service’s traffic unit said it nabbed a driver going 141 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on Greenbank Road at West Hunt Club Road Friday morning.

The vehicle was impounded and the driver’s licence suspending pending a court appearance on a stunt driving charge.

Take note car commuters: a few projects will impact Ottawa traffic starting Tuesday.

Highway 417 westbound between Woodroffe Avenue and Pinecrest Road will close nightly between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. from Tuesday to Saturday, Jan. 8. The westbound on-ramp from northbound and southbound Woodroffe Avenue will also close.

The Highway 417 westbound off-ramp to Pinecrest Road is closed until summer 2023 for Stage 2 LRT roadwork.

The northbound Airport Parkway on-ramp from westbound Hunt Club Road will close from 7 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 9 until 7 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 10.

Hunt Club Road at the Airport Parkway is reduced to one lane in each direction nightly between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. until mid-February 2022 for Stage 2 LRT construction.

And there’s some good news for families with six- and seven-year-old children taking transit: as of Jan. 1, those youngsters also qualify for no-charge child fares on OC Transpo.

When city council approved the 2022 municipal budget , Coun. Riley Brockington won unanimous support to offer free fares for children up to seven years old. The fares have been free for children up to five years old.
