Calgary police have charged two men in connection with the random stabbings of three people who were sprayed with a fire extinguisher before being assaulted.
Three people were stabbed within eight minutes of each other around 4 a.m. on Dec. 21 in the downtown core, according to Calgary police. Each victim was sprayed with a fire extinguisher before being violently stabbed in the abdomen, ribs or back.
“We will not tolerate this kind of violence within our city,” said Staff Sgt. Kurt Jacobs in a news release Tuesday.
The first victim was near the LRT platform at 7 Avenue and 4 Street S.W. when he was sprayed with a fire extinguisher and stabbed in the lower back. According to police, the man found a nearby medical facility to seek help and was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.
The second victim was sleeping in a bus shelter near 7 Avenue and 4 Street S.W. when he was awoken by the spray of a fire extinguisher and stabbed in the abdomen. He was able to make his way to the nearest LRT station to use the helpline and was transported to hospital in serious but stable condition.
Nearby, at the LRT station at 7 Avenue and 7 Street S.W., a third victim was also sprayed with a fire extinguisher as he was walking on the platform. He was then stabbed in the lower back and rib cage, police said. He was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.
“Our team of talented and dedicated investigators, along with the District Operations Team, are very good at what they do. If you seek to harm others, they will find you and you will be held accountable for your actions,” said Jacobs.
“In this case, the suspects will be spending the holidays in jail while our victims and their families recover from these senseless attacks.”
Investigators believe the attacks were random and “were done simply to intentionally cause harm to others,” the news release said.
Using CCTV images from Calgary Transit property, the investigators collected descriptions of the two offenders and executed a search warrant on a residence in the 900 block of 7 Avenue S.W. on Thursday. Officers arrested two men during the execution of the search warrant and a number of items, including knives, zap-strap cuffs, bear spray, brass knuckles, small quantities of various drugs, 7mm ammunition and a sawed-off .22 calibre rifle.
Also found at the residence, was the clothing that matched the description of the suspects in the CCTV images.
There are 21 charges between the two men who were arrested and charged. Both are scheduled to next appear in court on Jan. 4, 2022.
