Businesses hit by ‘Freedom Convoy’ have until April 22 to apply for property tax deferral

Retail and commercial property owners hit by the three-week “Freedom Convoy” occupation of the core have until April 22 to apply to put off interim and final property tax deadlines until mid-September.

Applications are open at ottawa.ca/taxes, the City of Ottawa said Tuesday.

Owners need their roll number, property address, details and dates of the financial hardship and documents supporting the difficulties their business faced.

The deferral is open to properties assessed as commercial, shopping, parking lot and vacant land and to industrial tax classes in an area bordered by Cathcart Avenue and Ottawa River, King Edward Avenue, Catherine Street and Bay Street.

Property owners must have lost more than 30 per cent of business or had to close temporarily as a direct result of the occupation and have had 2021 and earlier property taxes paid up by the time the 2022 interim instalment was due last month.

Those who get the deferral have to pass on financial relief to their commercial or retail tenants or face having it revoked, the city said. That would mean taxes, penalties, and interest would be due immediately based on the original dates.

The tax deferral program is part of a series of measures on the table at city council to help restore economic activity after the occupation that lasted from Jan. 28 through the Family Day long weekend.
