Your faithful social scribe will go out a limb here and opine that things are back to normal – perhaps even better than ever.

Hot on the heels of the Calgary Influential Women in Business Awards on April 27, another record-breaking event took place at the BMO Centre on April 30. More than 1,180 guests attended the 2022 Petroleum Services Association of Canada STARS & Spurs Gala in support of the STARS air ambulance service. The fabulous fete, presented by Precision Drilling, was attended by a who’s who in the patch and featured a keynote address from Alberta Energy Minister Sonya Savage (and here, I must congratulate Savage on recently being appointed Queen’s Counsel).

Now in its 28th year, the gala has raised more than $18 million for STARS over 27 years. And this year’s gala added handsomely to the total, raising more than $1.1 million. The gala has the distinction of being the longest-running and largest fundraiser in Alberta.

Gala chair, STEP Energy Services president and COO Steve Glanville noted “This year, the theme of the PSAC STARS & Spurs Gala is a fitting one: Progress is in the air. The resiliency of the people who work in the energy industry is remarkable and the growing sense of positivity and optimism is palpable.”

The evening included a land acknowledgement and blessing with Verna Powderface; the Chiniki Lake Singers & Dance Crew; performances by the Tryzub Ukrainian Dance Ensemble; a powerful address from Joel Irwin, STARS Very Important Patient; amazing live and silent auction items; and raffles galore. For many, the highlight of the night was legendary rocker Tom Cochrane taking to the stage with Red Rider, preceded by opening act Nice Horse.

Others in attendance included: PSAC president and CEO Gurpreet Lail; STARS president and CEO Andrea Robertson; Terri Strunk, STARS chief fundraising and brand officer; STARS’ COO, Mike Lamacchia and his wife Liana; Halliburton’s John Gorman and Tracy Wood; live industry auction committee co-chairs, Bennett Jones’ Darrell Peterson and Di-Corp’s Dirk LePoole; sponsorship committee co-chairs Chris McCullough of ARCUS Power and ARC Financial’s Peter Christopher.
